Just a quick post here to answer a question that has come up a couple of times. What is the shelf life of an ink cartridge? First off, the term shelf life basically relates to the time period at which the chemical properties of ink remain stable and the ink is able to perform at its best. The shelf life is generally dependent on the individual product/brand and its chemistry make-up. Many companies will list the shelf or expiration date on the box.

Shelf life is impacted by variables such as storage conditions. Exposure to heat and light can shorten the shelf life. Additionally the exposure to oxygen will also have detrimental effects on ink. The best way to store ink is in a cool and dry location.

With all that said, a typical shelf life for an ink cartridge is approximately 1 year from the date of manufacturing. Some companies have a 2 year shelf life on their ink cartridges. I have always tried to use an ink cartridge within 6 months of its purchase.

If you want to add something to your go green experience, try recycling empty inkjet cartridges. Most people don’t know that you can save and recycle these about six times instead of just once by refilling them. According to recent statistics, printer ink cartridges are being thrown away at the rate of thirteen per second. That adds up to a lot of plastic that will take many years to deteriorate and take up a lot of room in the already overused landfills.

An online search will show you many places to sell your empty printer ink jet cartridges. There should be a list of the brands of cartridges that they buy right on the website. Look for the ones that will pay shipping and provide prepaid labels. It is also a good thing to contribute to fund raising efforts.

Many schools, churches, and charities often do drives to collect empty ink cartridges and sell them to these websites to raise money for a good cause. They can raise money this way and also do something to help the environment. You can also help them by donating you ink cartridges to their collection. You should be able to get a two or three dollar refund on some brands if you live in an area that has office supply stores that are offering this. You just take them with you when you buy something from them that day and it will be deducted from your purchase. Just be sure to check and see if your brand is accepted in the refund policy, some brands are not. It is so much easier and
cheaper for the companies to refill the old cartridge and sell them as remanufactured as it is to make new ones, plus it helps the environment. These companies even sponsor drives to collect empty inkjet cartridges so they will be able to refill and resell them.

Think about all those empty inkjet and toner cartridges being thrown away and contributing to an already overly polluted world. It is a burden on taxpayers and it can take up to five hundred years for plastic to decompose, which is what they are made of. Yes plastic is an awesome material and has been since its birth, but it is made from oil. Have you ever seen the thick black smoke that results from burning plastic, this is very toxic and dangerous to the environment. Estimates say that only twenty to forty percent of ink cartridges are being recycled. This leaves a staggering sixty to eighty percent still going to the landfill.

You can even do the recycling yourself by buying an inkjet refill kit from InkSmile.

There’s no time like the present to start recycling your empty printer inkjet cartridges, even if you have never done it before, it is easy and will save you money. Its a great way to go green and save some money!

As always, don’t forget to check out our featured merchants on the right of the blog for the best deals on compatible ink, OEM ink and remanufactured ink.
